Most backyards in the Bay Area are either all concrete or all dead grass. Neither one is great. This Sunnyvale yard needed something that actually worked - something clean, functional, and easy to keep up with year-round.

Here's what we went with: a large paver patio using light grey pavers with a dark charcoal border. That two-tone look is subtle but makes a big difference. The border gives the whole patio a finished, intentional edge instead of just pavers dropping off into gravel. The layout runs from the back of the house all the way out, giving the homeowners a solid usable space for seating, entertaining, whatever they need.

We paired the paver area with two sections of synthetic grass set into the design. That combination - pavers and artificial turf - is one of the best things you can do for a low-water, low-maintenance yard. No mowing, no irrigation headaches, no muddy patches. It stays green and sharp-looking without any real effort on your end.

The gravel surrounding the patio keeps things tidy between the landscaped zones, and the whole layout just flows. Nothing feels cramped or thrown together. Every section has a purpose. That's the kind of planning that makes a backyard actually usable instead of just something you look at through a window.

Paver installation and synthetic grass work great together, and this Sunnyvale yard is a solid example of why. If your backyard isn't working for you right now, this is the kind of setup worth seriously considering.
