Pavers, Retaining Wall, and Fence Installation in Sunnyvale

This Sunnyvale backyard had a lot of potential - it just needed the right structure to tie everything together. No defined borders, no privacy, and no real outdoor living space to speak of. That's a pretty common starting point for a lot of the yards we work in around here.

We came in with three goals: add privacy with a solid wood fence, create usable hardscape space with modern pavers, and build a clean retaining wall to give the yard some definition and elevation. Each piece of this job works together. The fence handles the privacy. The retaining wall creates the separation between levels. And the pavers pull it all into a finished, functional space.

The cedar fence came out sharp - tight boards, consistent height, solid posts. That's the kind of fence that holds up and actually looks good while it does it. We also left a planting strip along the base, which gives the homeowner room to add greenery without it interfering with the fence line or the lawn.

The paver and retaining wall section is where this yard really got its character. The charcoal slate-style pavers are laid tight with clean lines, and the tan block retaining wall steps up naturally behind them. It gives the whole space a modern, layered look without feeling overdone.

When you combine all three elements - fence, wall, and pavers - you end up with a yard that feels intentional. Every part has a purpose, and nothing feels like an afterthought. That's what good hardscaping does. It makes the space work for you.
